World Sleep Day on March 21, 2018: The average sleep duration for the post-90s generation in China i

Date:2025-07-16
Today (the 21st) is World Sleep Day. This year's theme for World Sleep Day is "Join the world of sleep, keep your rhythm and enjoy life." According to the latest survey results from the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the average sleep duration for Chinese young people born in the 1990s is 7.5 hours, which is lower than the healthy sleep duration. For children, not only should they ensure sufficient sleep time, but also maintain good sleep quality.
Respiratory disorders affect sleep and require medical attention.
Experts state that breathing disorders are a significant factor affecting children's sleep.
Dr. Ye Jingying, the director of the Otolaryngology Department at Beijing Tsinghua Changgeng Hospital: The hypertrophy of the adenoids and tonsils in children is the primary cause of children's apnea and snoring. There are also congenital disorders related to insufficient jaw and facial development, as well as some disorders related to insufficient development of the central nervous system, which interfere with children's breathing. Once this problem is identified, it is essential to seek medical attention at a hospital.
Academician Lu Lin of the Chinese Academy of Sciences introduced that the three elements of children's sleep, exercise, and nutrition are crucial for regulating children's metabolism. There is evidence suggesting a connection between sleep duration and childhood obesity, and this finding is more pronounced in girls. Teenagers should ensure 8 hours of sleep per day. By depriving sleep time and increasing study time, scientific research has confirmed that overall academic performance declines.
Academician Lu Lin of the Chinese Academy of Sciences: Some studies have also been conducted worldwide where children are allowed to sleep for the time they need. There is another group of children who sleep less and participate in extracurricular classes. Five years later, the overall academic performance of children with less sleep and those who participate in extracurricular classes has declined.
Long-term use of drugs such as melatonin can affect memory.
Experts explain that in clinical practice, it has been observed that many people who suffer from poor sleep habits often take melatonin or sedative drugs on their own, but this approach is incorrect.
Dr. Ye Jingying, the director of the Otolaryngology Department at Beijing Tsinghua Changgeng Hospital: Neither of these drugs is recommended for long-term use. If melatonin is taken for a long time, drug resistance will develop very quickly. Pregnant women must absolutely not take melatonin as it has a risk of causing fetal abnormalities. Sedative drugs, if taken for a long time, will disrupt our sleep cycle and affect memory.
